What are Teaching Certificates/Diplomas?

MTB’s Music Teaching qualifications are designed to support those looking to teach Music at all levels of experience.  For those looking to start their journey into Music Teaching we provide an assistant teaching qualification to provide the basic knowledge needed and a Teaching Certificate to develop this further. For Teachers who are more experienced we provide diploma qualifications designed to expand your skills and knowledge and these qualifications in turn can provide reassurance to employers and learners of your credentials in this area.

MTB Teaching Certificates are set at two levels: Level 2 Music Teaching Assistant and Level 3 Music Teaching Certificate.

MTB Teaching Diplomas are set at two levels: an Associate of the Music Teachers’ Board (AMTB) and a Licentiate of the Music Teachers’ Board (LMTB).

MTB Instrumental Teaching Qualifications are comprised of 4 modules:

  • Module 1: Performance
  • Module 2: Instrument Specific
  • Module 3: General Teaching
  • Module 4: Additional Units

MTB Classroom Teaching Qualifications are comprised of 4 modules:

  • Module 1: Performance
  • Module 2: General Teaching
  • Module 3: Classroom Teaching
  • Module 4: Additional Units

Further information on what is required for each module is listed in great detail on our digital syllabuses where each module is broken down into separate units. Within each of these units we highlight the Key Area being studied, Key Elements within each Key Area and the Levels and Expectations of these to provide guidance on the requirements expected at that level.

Exam Format

As with the rest of MTB’s qualifications, our Teaching Diplomas are all remote, digital qualifications.

The first part of the exam will be a short video recorded performance on your instrument of choice.  Each syllabus specifies the expected level and length of the performance.

The second part of the exam will be questions which will require either verbal responses or demonstrations.  These questions will be generated for each exam when you press start exam on your exam portal. You must already have started your video recording on the MTB App and film yourself pressing this start exam button for the exam to be valid. You will need two separate devices, one with the App on for video recording your verbal answers and demonstrations and one to display the live exam questions generated on your exam portal. We would recommend a mobile device for the App recording and a computer for the live question display.

Assessments are recorded and submitted in the normal fashion but must be recorded and submitted through our App. However, the one element that is different is that this assessment is our Live Exam Instructions which must be triggered via your MTB Exam Portal when starting your exam.

Recorded Assessments can be submitted in two separate recordings, the first being the exam performance (module 1) and the second being Live Exam Questions and demonstrations. The Live Exam Instructions must be completed in one recording session and the questions are only generated once, this section of the exam has a fixed exam duration once the questions are generated.

These recordings for both parts of the exam (if separate) must be submitted at the same time, this can be achieved by saving the performance on your app into your saved section then selecting to add an additional clip to record your questions or vice versa. Your exam front cover will provide further specific guidance on the exam taking process.
