MTB’s Prep Test & Pre-Grades are an introduction to instrumental exams.  They provide a helpful way to support and reward progress prior to reaching Grade 1.

Pre-Grades: are set at an Introductory and Higher level roughly at a 1/3rd and 2/3rd’s point in a learner’s progress towards Grade 1. Pre-Grades can be taken as either a Practical or Performance Grade. Practical Pre-Grades are comprised of a Recital section of three pieces and Technical Exercises. Performance Pre-Grades are comprised of a Recital of at least 4 pieces (Contemporary at least 3 pieces).

Prep Test: this is set at a single level, equivalent to Pre-Grade Introductory or below.  This exam is ideal for candidates to have a first experience of examinations in a friendly, lower stakes environment. Unlike Pre-Grades, no marks are awarded in this type of exam*, only comments and feedback on their performance are given, which are designed to be encouraging.  The exam is comprised of a performance of 3 pieces.

To view the specific requirements for each grade and instrument visit our Syllabuses.

* As Prep Tests do not receive marks or Pass/Fail, unlike our Pre-Grades or other qualifications, Prep Tests are not listed as an Ofqual regulated qualification. MTB accredits these exams itself as an Exam Board, you will still receive an MTB certificate for this exam.

How should I select suitable pieces for the Recital?

MTB provide recital lists for each instrument and grade on our Syllabuses and you may select any pieces from these lists for the Recital section of your exam.

However, MTB offer complete flexibility over repertoire with our Free Choice options, so you can choose to put together a recital comprising the music you really want to perform. As long as the pieces you choose are of the appropriate grade standard, they would be suitable to consider for your recital. For Guidance on Free Choice Repertoire click here.
